(This is the Sunday prior to Easter.)
GREETING
Jesus, we still hear the distant echoes of you entering the Holy City.
They call to us from the mountains and the city’s streets.
The children laughing, running before you, men and women happily
welcomed One for whose coming they had so long prayed.
Today, with palms in our hands and singing hosannas in the highest,
we watch the gates of your new Jerusalem opening wide.
We bow down before you, O Holy King, praising God’s faithfulness.
Accept our humble worship, and come rule in our hearts.
HYMN 279 “Mantos y Palmas” (“Filled with Excitement”)
PSALM 118:1-2, 19-29
PRAYER
Are we still so divided, God,
now welcoming Jesus as our Savior,
cheering for his rule over our lives;
yet cowering at the first sign of criticism,
and sacrificing Jesus to save ourselves?
Jesus knew who we are, yet
humbly went where we would not,
sacrificing himself to save our lives;
doing everything to let us see your face,
and bind our hearts in unbreakable unity.
In his passion we are one,
our fickleness overruled by love,
our cowardice driven out by faith;
with one cross, one baptism, one church
standing together with one ruling Savior.
This day, with palms in hand
and Christ’s passion in our hearts,
we rejoice in coming resurrection.
Hear the children’s laughter, our praises,
and eternal thanksgiving to you, our God. Amen.
GATHER WITH A CONGREGATION OF CHRISTIANS
TO CONTINUE THE WORSHIP OF GOD
ON THIS DAY OF JOYFUL RESURRECTION.
