(This is celebrated on the Sunday prior to Ash Wednesday.)

“HE WAS TRANSFIGURED BEFORE THEM”

Matthew 17:1-9; Mark 9:2-9; Luke 9:28-36

GREETING

Once Jesus took Peter, James and John

      up a high mountain of holy transfiguration.

There they saw Jesus in heavenly glory.

      “Listen to him,” you told those disciples.

We have come to this place of worship,

      which is our high mountain, God of Glory.

Let us also see Jesus revealed in glory,

      and let us listen to him and obey his Word.

Here we bow to his glory and wisdom;

      and we will love him, as he first loved us.

HYMN   349   “Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus”

PSALM   50:1-6

PRAYER

Each year, we believers pause to honor your transfiguration, Jesus.

      We all wonder what to say, what to think, what to do, what to be.

There are no decorations, no gifts to give, no familiar songs to sing.

      We are as clueless to how to respond as were your first disciples.

Grasping transfiguration is harder than climbing physical mountains.

      The air gets thin.  The winds pick up.  Cloudy mists hide the way.

We have heard the stories of how you changed into a heavenly glory;

      and how you embraced the law and prophecy in Moses and Elijah;

how your ministry changed from teaching, healing, working miracles,

      into a single-minded march toward everyone’s future in Jerusalem.

Though comprehension eludes us, we are determined to follow you.

      Give us the strength and heart to keep going as we climb upwards.

The mountaintop is still ahead of us, Jesus.  We do not know the way;

      but we trust you to lead us, to help, and to carry us when we falter.

Lead us, Jesus, into the heavenly glory you have promised to disciples.

      Lead us higher and higher, until we too are pleasing to our Father.  Amen.

GATHER WITH A CONGREGATION OF CHRISTIANS

TO CONTINUE THE WORSHIP OF GOD

ON THIS DAY OF JOYFUL RESURRECTION.
